Person admits sex offences involving boys at summer program

Courtroom illustration Legal proceedings
The accused pleaded guilty to 17 offences at Leicester Crown Court on Friday

An individual who laced treats with sedative and distributed them to youngsters at a summer camp in the region has pleaded guilty to sexual crimes against two young males both between nine and ten.

Jon Ruben was taken into custody after eight youngsters and a grown-up experienced illness at the location in mid-summer.

The 76-year-old, from Ruddington in Nottinghamshire, pleaded guilty to a total of 17 charges when he appeared at the courthouse on the end of the week.

Nevertheless, he refused to admit one of the sexual offences he was facing, which was involving a nine-year-old child.

The accused was kept in jail ahead of a subsequent court date on late November.

'Candy game'

Mary Prior KC, presenting evidence, described Ruben's offending to the legal proceedings.

She explained his targets were children from difficult backgrounds who were participating in a youth camp which he managed.

The man engaged in a "candy game" with the minors, the legal counsel stated, in which he would access the boys' rooms when they were preparing to sleep and tell them to eat sweets "rapidly".

She told the court Ruben had conducted this practice with the young males "over an extended period", and minors had earlier experienced illness the following morning.

She said Ruben had been capable of justifying this over a long period as the children being "overwrought by enjoyment", until his stepchild had worries in summer 2025.

The prosecutor added: "In the summer" his family member had concerns about the situation, for good reason.

"They chose" to have a look in the defendant's belongings."

The legal counsel stated objects including lubricant, Vaseline and injection devices were found, and his stepchild contacted the authorities about his concerns.

She explained the man continued to engage in the "sweet game" with six children that night - that Saturday - and they were all sick the next day.

"Authorities" had not responded by that stage," she stated further.

The regulatory agency, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, previously told that it was investigating the police response of the events.

The legal representative said the youngsters were having difficulty walking due to being ill, so the stepson called the law enforcement once more.

She explained Ruben then conducted the "sweet game" in a space of five children.
